Regional Associations

The Center for Asian and International Bioethics conducts health education
projects for medically deprived populations in the developing world,
as well as cross-cultural comparative research into the spiritual
basis of ethics in Judaism and other Asian sources including Hinduism,
Buddhism
and Shinto. Clinical ethics and research ethics are taught to students
in health and medical fields.
The Eubios Ethics Institute was founded
by in 1990, in Christchurch, New Zealand and in Tsukuba Science City,
Japan. The Eubios Ethics Institute
is a nonprofit group that aims to stimulate the international discussion
of ethical issues, and how we may use technology in ways consistent
with "good life" (eu-bios). It aims at an integrated and
cross-cultural approach to bioethics, and at building up an international
network.
Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asian and Western Pacific Region

The mission of the Forum for Ethical
Review Committees in Asian and Western Pacific Region (FERCAP)
is to foster the development of ethical
review committees in member countries toward competency, independence,
quality and effectiveness upon reviewing biomedical studies. Workshops,
discussions on ethical review regional, national, and local traditions
and values in ethical review improving communication & education
for ethics committees in the region will be promoted to provide
a platform for representation in the international discussion on
bioethics

China

Centre for Applied Ethics - Hong Kong Baptist University

The Centre for Applied Ethics (CAE), inaugurated
in 1992, strives to stimulate critical reasoning about fundamental
ethical concerns in
contemporary society, to raise awareness of moral values, and to further
strengthen the University's commitment to research and whole person
education. The Centre actively promotes and coordinates research in
the areas of bioethics, business ethics, professional ethics, and social
ethics. It encourages the development of ethics across the curriculum.
Hong Kong Bioethics Association

The Hong Kong Bioethics
Association was established in 1996.
Objectives of the Association are as follows: to promote and increase
awareness of bioethics issues in Hong Kong for the benefit of the general
public; to identify collaboration between all those interested and
concerned with bioethics issues; to collect and disseminate information
relating to bioethics issues; to organise meetings and seminars on
issues of bioethics; to publish newsletters, on bioethics issues.
Medical Ethics Unit- Peking University Health Science Center

The medical ethics
unit of PUHSC (former Beijing Medical University) was established in
1988. The unit is the pioneer in the field of medical
ethics in China, and has academic exchanges with the EU, USA, Germany,
Poland, New Zealand, Canada, Korea, and Japan. It is the chair unit
of the Chinese Medical Ethics Association, and the work unit of the
Medical Ethics Committee of the Ministry of Health. The Unit has undertaken
many research projects including: teaching reform of medical ethics;
international conferences on medical ethics comparison between China
and the USA; comparison research of informed consent models in USA,
Hong Kong and mainland China; bioethics leadership development.
India

All India Association for Bioethics

The
All India Association for Bioethics (AIBA) was established in 1997
and is the largest bioethics association in Asia in terms of life memberships.
The Association conducts international conferences and publishes a
bimonthly newsletter which is distributed to 10 countries.
Indonesia

Iran

Committee of Bioethics, National Committee for Ethics in Science and
Technology

The Iranian Committee of Bioethics has organized and
hosted a National Training Workshop on Bioethics and a conference on
Ethics in Science.
They have worked at sensitizing the media and civil societies to the
necessity of the implementation of the International Declaration on
Human Genetic Data, and established a cooperation network in ethical,
legal, and social studies of life sciences.
National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology

The National Research Center
for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NRCGEB) was established
in 1989 and was established with dual purposes
of promoting research in avant-garde areas of biological sciences and
biotechnology and providing advanced training and education programs
for scientists and students. The coupling of scientific technology
with ethics and morality is necessary and NRCGEB is determined to contribute
to the well-being of the country by working to transmit the intellectual
wisdom of human society, helping to create a safe global environment,
and contributing knowledge and expertise that will be of use to future
generations.

The Lord Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovits Center of Jewish Medical Ethics - Ben-Gurion University

The Lord Immanuel
Jakobovits Center for Jewish Medical Ethics conducts research in medical
halacha and in medical and health implications
of Jewish philosophy. It offers courses in ethics in health-related
philosophy for all Faculty degree programs. The Center also provides
a variety of enrichment programs for the Faculty community, sponsoring
forums on topics of medical ethics, bringing outside speakers to the
campus.

Korea

Korean Bioethics Association

The Korean Bioethics
Association has a mission to study philosophical, ethical, legal, social,
economic, medical, environmental, religious
and anthropological problems arising when trying to apply the biomedical
technologies to human beings and the biosphere. It also tries to put
the results of these considerations into practice.
The Korean Society
for Medical Ethics Education was founded in 1997 to promote medical
ethics education in various health science educational
institutions in Korea, such as medical schools, nursing schools and
dental schools. It publishes journals twice a year and holds an annual
academic conference.
Lebanon

Pakistan

An important milestone in the development
of bioethics at AKU was the formation of the Bioethics Group (BG)
in 1997. This group comprises
of individual faculty members and hospital staff sharing a common
interest in bioethics and has representation from a variety of departments.
The group assists in providing education in healthcare ethics to
healthcare
providers. It conducts research on bioethical issues and assists
in the decision making process in the face of ethical dilemmas, to
benefit
patients, families and health care professionals.
The Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC) was inaugurated in Karachi in 2004. The central goals of CBEC include serving as an academic and intellectual national resource, helping to produce ethical researchers and healthcare professionals and enhancing bioethical education and research relevant to Pakistan and the region. The Centre also aims towards building national, regional, and international bridges and to enrich contemporary discourse in bioethics.
Philippines

Philippine Council for Health Research and Development

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD)
is one of the five sectoral councils of the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST). It is a forward-looking, partnership-based national
body responsible for coordinating and monitoring research activities
in the country. PCHRD, organized the National Ethics Committee (NEC)
and promoted the establishment of the Institutional Ethics Review Committees
(IERCs) that are tasked with the ethical review of health research
protocols.
Singapore




The Bioethics Advisory Committee (BAC)
is charged to ensure that Singapore's decisions regarding the biomedical
sciences and research are solidly
based on good science and high ethical and legal standards. It actively
gathers information and views from the international and local community,
and only after careful deliberation will the BAC make its recommendations
to the Life Sciences Ministerial Committee.
Centre for Medical Ethics and Professionalism- Singapore Medical Association

The core purpose of the Centre for Medical Ethics and Professionalism
is to develop and promote the art and science of medical ethics and
medical practice and their application for the betterment of patient
care and public health. The scope of activities covers issues of professionalism,
ethics, and health law and practice management.
