What is the Goal?

To provide an intensive, interactive and high-quality learning experience in clinical ethics consultation that provides participants with the opportunity for practical training and theoretical background in a relaxed and inspirational setting.

What Topics Will be Covered?

We have assembled a diverse team of clinical bioethicists from across North America who will provide insight into and help you to practice the ethics consultation process, from intake and preparation, to meeting facilitation and evaluation. They will also deliver engaging presentations on related topics such as consultation and the law, consent and the consultation process, and bioethics mediation.

Who Should Attend?

All members of clinical ethics committees/teams and health care professionals, administrators and staff interested in improving their skills in planning for and facilitating ethics consultations are invited to attend.

Is This Too Advanced for Me?

We are anticipating that participants will have some familiarity with the ethics consultation process either by being involved in consults previously, or by sitting on an ethics committee/team that conducts consults. However, we are not expecting participants to have extensive experience or education in ethics consultation or ethical theory.

Is This Too Basic for Me?

Given the variety of topics and the practice sessions offered, we think it likely that individuals who have experience in doing ethics consults will find this a useful opportunity for practicing and refining their skills. After all, who amongst us can confidently say that we are experts in ethics consultation?

Is This Too Intensive for Me?

Well, it is, after all, called a boot camp, so the days will be long and busy with information, practice and learning. We will also be sending participants several articles to read prior to arriving at Boot Camp, in order to have a strong foundation for meaningful discussion as a group, and to maximize the benefit of our time together. However, we planned the course in such a way that the sessions are interactive and provide diverse learning opportunities. We have tried to mix up the agenda with small group exercises, in-depth presentations by experts, detailed role-play exercises and “short and snappy” presentations. We hope that this sort of variety keeps the days interesting, engaging and fun. And, of course, we plan on taking breaks to enjoy beautiful Banff!

Certification

Participants who attend the Boot Camp in its entirety will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed the PHEN Ethics Consultation Boot Camp. PHEN is happy to assist participants in their application to professional organizations for continuing education credit by providing any additional information or documentation on course participation, as required. Of course, attending the Boot Camp won’t turn you into an ethics consultant, but we think it’ll be a very useful building block in one’s ethics education and training.

Advance Reading

In order to have a strong foundation for meaningful discussion and to maximize the benefit of our time together at Boot Camp, participants will be asked to read several articles prior to attending.
