Research Ethics Boards in Alberta

Research Ethics Boards, often called Institutional Review Boards in
the United States, exist to conduct prospective review of health research
to ensure that human subjects are adequately protected. The following
is a list of Research Ethics Boards in Alberta.
AHS Alberta Cancer Research Ethics Committee

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) Alberta Cancer Research Ethics
Committee (ACREC) provides scientific and ethical review of all new
protocols and annual renewals involving adult human subjects and/or
research requiring access to personal information in the custody or
control of AHS submitted by cancer researchers throughout the province
of Alberta.

College of Physicians and Surgeons Research Ethics Review Committee

The Research Ethics Review Committee (RERC) assesses research proposals
submitted by Alberta physicians and provides scientific and ethical
feedback to investigators. The RERC must approve the proposal before it
can proceed. All research must be in compliance with laws and other
requirements for research involving human subjects.

Community Research Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA)

The Community Research Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA) provides review
of health research being conducted in any region, organization or
authority that does not have a duly constituted health research ethics
board and process.

University of Alberta Research Ethics Board

The Health Research Ethics Board (HREB) administers
the ethics review process for all faculty, staff, and students of the
University of Alberta (U of A) Health Sciences Faculties, Alberta Health
Services, and the Covenant Health. The HREB has two panels: Biomedical
Research and Health Research.
The HREB is a joint committee of the:

HREB constituents. The panels are governed by the Health Research Ethics
Administration Board (HREAB) and the University Committee on Human
