Introduction to Bioethics: A PHEN Distance Education Course
Many Albertans who work in the field of health care, who are members of ethics committees, or are interested in issues of health ethics, are prevented from attending formal ethics courses for various reasons. PHEN has responded to this challenge by creating the Distance Education Course: Introduction to Bioethics. The main objective of this course is to offer an opportunity for formal bioethics education in an alternative mode. This course will cover 12 modules over a 14 week period and will be taken remotely. Presentations on the various topics covered will be delivered by prominent North American bioethicists and the course will be administered by the Network staff. A certificate will be offered from PHEN to those who successfully complete the course. In addition, PHEN is in the process of having the course accredited for CME credits and formal post-secondary credits from Grant MacEwan College. Instruction will take place via videotaped presentations, interactive teleconferences and internet discussion. To conclude the course, participants will have the opportunity to attend an in-person session/graduation where two additional topics will be presented. This session will coincide with the PHEN annual conference and general meeting. The course will run from February 5 to May 18, 2001. Registration will be limited to 25 people at a fee of approximately $500 per participant.
