What is a Personal Directive in Alberta?

A personal directive is a written document (signed, dated and witnessed) that takes effect when an individual becomes mentally incapable of deciding on personal matters, such as health care. A personal directive can appoint an agent to decide for the individual. It may also contain instructions or directions for future care.

The Personal Directives Act in Alberta became law on December 1, 1997. The most recent amendment came into effect on June 30th, 2008.
